At the start of a new year, Andy enrolled into the WIOA Out-of-School Youth (OSY) program, eager to make a change, but was uncertain about his future. Basic skills in math and unemployment posed a challenge for Andy, but he was determined to overcome any obstacles in his path. His journey is a testament to perseverance, hard work, and the power of support.

Andy made his first step by attending the You’re Hired employability skills educational workshop series, a program designed to prepare participants for the workforce by teaching essential job readiness skills. He successfully completed the workshops, gaining valuable insights into resume building, interview techniques, and workplace professionalism. He also enrolled in tutoring to strengthen his foundational math skills.

On a mission to improve his math skills, Andy diligently worked to complete tutoring and successfully obtained an Educational Functioning Level (EFL) gain. This significant milestone not only demonstrated his academic improvement but also boosted his confidence to pursue his career goals by achieving the scores he needed to apply for training.

With his newfound skills and motivation, Andy set his sights on obtaining a CDL A license. With the guidance from his career counselor, he submitted his training application and gained approval to begin CDL training at Berks Technical Institute-Allentown, formerly known as McCann, on April 29, 2024. Over the next few weeks, Andy dedicated himself to learning the technical and practical aspects of commercial driving, completing his training and earning his license on May 23, 2024.

However, the road to employment was not without its challenges. Despite his qualifications, Andy faced difficulties securing a job due to concerns with his Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Undeterred, he collaborated closely with his recruiter, who provided guidance and support in addressing these barriers. Their combined efforts paid off when, on December 2, 2024, Andy secured a position with Forged LLC at Amazon Freight Partners. His role as a commercial driver offered a starting wage of $37 per hour, marking the culmination of his hard work and persistence.

Andy’s success story is an inspiring example of what can be achieved with determination, a willingness to learn, and a strong support system. From improving his math skills to earning his CDL and overcoming employment barriers, Andy has demonstrated that no obstacle is insurmountable. He now looks forward to a bright future, driving toward his goals and achieving new milestones.
