When Isaac first came to PA CareerLink®, he was facing homelessness and searching for more than just a job. He was searching for stability, purpose, and a real career. He knew he wanted to work with his hands and was especially interested in welding. He had heard it was a lucrative trade that could provide long-term, gainful employment, and he was determined to find a way in.
In September 2024, Isaac enrolled in the Out-of-School Youth (OSY) program and committed to beginning his journey. He started by attending the “You’re Hired” employability skills workshops, where he built a strong foundation in career readiness, learning how to craft a marketable resume, strengthening his interviewing skills, and gaining knowledge in financial literacy and leadership. With the support of his Career Counselor and the Business Services team, Isaac began exploring hands-on opportunities that would allow him to gain experience while continuing to shape his career path.

In October 2024, he was matched with B.A. Autos Inc., a local auto mechanical service business, for a Paid Work Experience (PWE). As a General Services Assistant, Isaac balanced customer service responsibilities while shadowing experienced auto technicians. The role allowed him to develop practical skills, observe trade professionals in action, and strengthen his work ethic.
While completing his work experience, Isaac continued researching welding programs and decided he wanted to pursue formal training at Welder Training & Testing Institute (WTTI). However, in early December 2024, he hit an unexpected roadblock when he learned the program had a wait list and his potential start date was uncertain. Rather than becoming discouraged, Isaac stayed focused. He continued working at B.A. Autos and successfully completed his work experience in mid-January 2025. His employer praised him for being reliable and accountable, qualities that would continue to define his journey.
Through February 2025, as he waited for enrollment to open at WTTI, Isaac remained proactive. He met regularly with his Career Counselor and Recruiter, explored welding job opportunities, and continued building momentum. Then, in early March 2025, he received the long-awaited news that he could begin the enrollment process at the welding school. After completing all program requirements, he was approved for training and officially started welding training in early April 2025.
For the next seven months, Isaac immersed himself in learning the trade. His hard work paid off in November 2025 when he graduated from WTTI with a 3.0 GPA, and even more impressively, with a full-time employment offer in hand from Rhoads Industries, an industrial fabrication, maintenance, and maritime services company. He spent the final month of 2025 completing pre-hire requirements and preparing for his new chapter.
In early January 2026, Isaac officially began working as a Welder at Rhoads Industries, earning $32.00 per hour. Today, he earns $36.00 per hour in his dream job.
From facing homelessness to thriving in a high-demand skilled trade, Isaac’s journey is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and opportunity, a new future is always within reach.
