Pennsylvania’s Child Labor Laws indicate no one under the age of 18 shall be employed without a general or vacation employment certificate. The employment certificates are issued by school authorities and require proof of age and parental/guardian signature(s).

An employment certificate is issued to minors ages 14-15.

A transferable work permit is issued to minors ages 16-17.

Youth aged 18 years or older do not need them.

Historically, women in the Valley had to fight for basic respect in industrial settings. For #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re looking back at those who forged the path for the modern industry.

🔌 Iva Ferris, a former employee at the historic Bethlehem Steel, faced extreme hostility when she worked in the electrical repair shop over 40 years ago. She didn’t let that deter her from her craft, and she mastered the trade.

💪🏼 Bess King and other women started their careers as millwright apprentices at Bethlehem Steel in the late 1970s. Taunted by their male counterparts, they paved the way for pregnancy leave and safety protocols that are now standard in union contracts.
